L1 Layer list - Sample standard

Using one prefix letter for your discipline - stray/unwanted layers from foreign/exploded blocks can then be more easily identified and dealt with.

LAYER PREFIX (or NAME)

DEFINITION / CONTENT

COMMENTS

0 (Zero)

AutoCAD's basic start up layer

Exploded blocks end up here

"A***" Prefix

Architectural Modelspace layers for 2D or 3D use.

AAAMEMO

(hidden) MEMO / notepaper page for designer

Has extra "A"s provided so it stays at the top of the layer list.

AAANOTE

NOTEs Groups of Notes and/or Legends used in every project that are in modelspace (in your dwt template) and viewed through viewports.

Use a constant logical scale. i.e. as if for a 1:100 viewport.

AAAREDL

REDLine

For notes & corrections by others

"A01***",Prefix etc.

Architectural Model space layers by floor level

Check your local office convention whether ground level is "00"or "01". A-1= First basement level

i.e. A02WALLDIM, A03SITETXT (Remove the zero in front of the number if less than 9 levels and no basement).

A****AREA

For floor AREA or room area calculations that are often required.

Use polylines or rectangles to create boundaries if not defined in WALL layers. Use the area command.

A****BOUN

BOUNdary of site (allotment)

A****CEIL

CEILing

Reflected ceiling plan

A****DIMS

DIMensionS. Separate layer per dimension style if using paperspace but dimensioning in modelspace

Use suffix which relates to your dimension style names.

i.e. A1DIMS0001 (for 1:1), A1DIMS0010 (for 1:10)

A****DOOR

DOORs

A****ELEC

ELECtrical

A****FIXT

FIXTures

i.e. plumbing fixtures (not built-in cupboards).

A****FLOO

FLOOr

i.e. A3FLOOFIN

A*******FRAM

FRAMing

i. e. A1WALLFRAM, A1ROOFFRAM, A2FLOOFRAM

A****FURN

FURNiture

A****GRID

GRID lines - structural

A****JOIN

built in JOINery

A****LAND

LANDscaping

A****ROOF

ROOF

A****SECT

SECTional views

A****SITE

SITE plan related layer

A****STR

STRuctural members

i.e. Structural steel members designed by others (or XREF in)

A***WALL

Proposed WALLs

A***WALLBRI

WALLs BRIck

Brick veneer walls would be of both WALLBRI and WALLTIM if the framing is to be shown separately in a framing plan.

A***WALLDEM

Existing WALLs to be DEMolished

A***WALLPAR

WALLs PARtition

Low walls not to ceiling height (residential) or a partition walling system (commercial).

A***WALLREM

Existing WALLs to REMain

A***WALLTIM

WALLs TIMber framed

A***WIND

WINDows

A***********DET

DETails

i.e.A2SECTDET

A***********DIM

DIMensions

i.e. A2WALLDIM

A***********FIN

FINishes

i.e. A3FLOOFIN

A***********GRI

Alternative layer for structural GRId

i.e. A2STEEGRI

A***********HAT

HATch pattern fill

i.e. A1WALLHAT

A***********HID

HIDden (specific line type dependent layer)

i.e. AROOFHID

A***********POL

POLy line for hatch boundary

i.e. A1WALLPOL

A***********TXT

TeXT

i.e. A1SITETXT

A************TXT3

TeXT 3 (3 mm printed height) for example.

"D3***" Prefix

specific 3D (3 Dimensional) components for CAD modelling.

(i.e: D3FLOO, D3ROOF, D3TREE)

See next table below for listing & explanation

DEFPOINTS

definition points (AutoCAD default layer)

(could include paperspace v/ports here if early version of AutoCAD)

"PA***" Prefix

Paper space layer (Architectural)

PASHEE

Paper space SHEEt template, Architectural

PATXT

Paper space (Architectural) TeXT

"XA***" Prefix

Temporary, outdated Architectural layers

Not to be referred to by consultants.

AXSCRA

temporary SCRAp / wastebin objects/ items.

Used like Windows "recycle bin"

Inkjet technology now allows more flexibility with colour selection for layers so colour standards have not been suggested.

Linetype and linetype scale standards are still required.

On complex projects use AutoCAD's "layer filters" to bring up for example;

only "Level 1" layers (A1*) only the "3D layers" (AD3*) only the hatched layers (*HAT*).

For a layer record of a specific project (including colour, linetype, & status), a print-out from your drawing can be obtained (See item L2 on this web site).
